Miya Signor, LMSW

Valuing the unique and interdependent roles the body, mind and spirit play in healing and growth, Miya feels it is critical to link them, entering through ways that feel best for each client.  Some begin with cognitive, task focused work. Others enter through deep feeling.  Still others through somatic tracking and stress release.  All benefit from leaning into a step by step process that leaves clients feeling more organized and can track their progression.  As the client -therapist container strengthens, trust is re-established, not only in relationship, but also trust in our system’s ability to neurologically repair.

Miya’s gentle style, rooted presence and active engagement helps clients feel seen and heard.   She explains: “When you feel attention dropping down into the subconscious, I’m on your side. Together we feel the interplay. You follow me and I follow you to a reparative place, where defenses can soften, and inward attention can go into places we don’t normally allow ourselves to go.”  She welcomes even the most challenging sides of our personalities, inviting self-compassion and more balanced sense of self and the world.

MIya is passionate about working with adults and teens who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and interpersonal issues.  Drawing on her experience working with teens at Sanctuary for Families, Miya has been amazed by how malleable teens are.  Eager to heal before life challenges have fully taken hold, when teen’s see an adult really listening, that their experiences and point of view is values, they quickly open up to face sides of themselves and are determined to explore.

A graduate of Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, Miya has an extensive background in the study and teaching of yoga, and is certified Somatic Experiencing (SE). She has trained in Trauma Focused- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), and mindfulness practices.

Miya was lucky to grow up immersed in the Londonderry elementary school her parents founded, where kids of all ages and diverse backgrounds were trusted to follow their hearts, were given secure freedom to explore the world on their terms, at their own pace.  In this less structured school of play, she and her friends experienced curiosity as powerful, a source of bonding, closeness and love.

What draws Miya’s curiosity outside the therapy room is her yoga practice, baking, meditation and gardening. She also loves traveling to new places so her mind can stay flexible and inquisitive to the beauty of the unknown.
